1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

1.The New Year is a time for resolutions. Mentally, at least, most of us could compile formidable lists of do's, and don'ts. (The same old favourites recur year in and year out with monotonous regularity. We resolve to get up earlier each morning, eat less, find more time to play with the children, do a thousand and one jobs about the house, be nice to people we don't like, drive carefully and take the dog for a walk every day. Past experience has taught us that certain accomplish- ments are beyond attainment. If we remain deep-rooted liars, it is only because we have so often experienced the frustration that results from failure. 

2. Most of us fail in our efforts at self-improvement because our schemes are too ambitious and we never have time to carry them out. We also make the fundamental error of announcing our resolutions to everybody so that we look even more foolish when we slip back into our bad old ways. Aware of these pitfalls, this year I attempted to keep my resolutions to myself. I limited myself to two modest ambitions: to do physical exercise every morning and to read more every evening. An all-night party on New Year's Eve provided me with a good excuse for not carrying out either of these new resolutions on the first day of the year, but on the second, I applied myself assiduously to the task.

3. The daily exercise lasted only eleven minutes and I proposed to do them early in the morning before anyone had got up. The self-discipline required to drag myself out of bed eleven minutes earlier than usual was considerable. Nevertheless, I managed to creep down into the living-room for two days before anyone found me out. After jumping about on the carpet and twisting the the human human frame into uncomfortable positions, I sat down at the breakfast table in an exhausted condition. It was this that betrayed me. The next morning the whole family trooped in to watch the performance. That was really upsetting but I fended off the taunts and jibes of the family good humorously and soon everybody got used to the idea. However, my enthusiasm waned, the time I spent at exercise gradually diminished. Little by little the eleven minutes fell to zero. By 10th January, I was back to where I had started from. I argued that if I spent less time exhausting myself at exercise in the morning, I would keep my mind fresh for reading when I got home from work. Resisting the hypnotizing effect of television, I sat in my room for a few evenings with my eyes glued to a book. One night, however, feeling cold and lonely, I went downstairs and sat in front of the television pretending to read. That proved to be my undoing, for I soon got back to the old habit of dozing off in front of the screen. I still haven't given up my resolution to do more reading. In fact, I have just bought a book entitled 'How to Read a Thousand Words a Minute'. Perhaps it will solve my problem, but I just haven't had time to read it.

2. Social media has transformed how we connect. Due to busy lives and geographical distances, people now rely on technology to maintain relationships. Social networking sites and apps have revolutionized communication by allowing users to share information and ideas globally through interactive platforms. These sites, accessible from desktops, laptops, and mobile phones, are popular due to their features and ease of use. Social media is an excellent educational tool. All the information one requires is just a click away. Students can educate themselves on various topics using social media. Moreover, live lectures are now possible because of social media. 3. But there is always a drawback to every good that comes with it, no matter how beneficial it is. Social media has caused addiction to users. If the use of social media is not monitored, it can lead to grave consequences. It is harmful because it invades one's privacy like never before. Users of social media are becoming victims of fraudulent and online scams that seem to be genuine. It also leads to cyberbullying which affects any person significantly. Students, too, are exceedingly active on social media sites these days, limiting them from academic as well as outdoor activities, which hampers with their academic performance. Social media also creates communal rifts. Fake news is spread with the use of it, which poisons the mind of peace-loving citizens.

4. Social media, thus, has both advantages and disadvantages. But it all depends on the user at the end. The youth must particularly create a balance between their academic performances, physical activities, and social media. Excess use of anything is harmful and the same thing applies to social media too. Therefore, by managing the social media habits and focusing on real-life interactions, one can enjoy the benefits of social media without letting it overwhelm their lives.

Because of deforestation, many animals lose their homes, rainfall becomes irregular, and the air becomes polluted.

Forests are very important for life on Earth. They give us oxygen, control climate, and protect the soil. Still, man continues to destroy them for his selfish needs. In this way, man is harming nature and also putting human life in danger. That is why man is said to be the biggest enemy of mankind.

Answer:  The author spent his childhood with his grandmother in the village. His grandmother was a simple and religious woman who always prayed and told him stories from the Bible and other holy books. She took care of him lovingly and helped him get ready for school every day.

In the village, the school was attached to a temple. The author learned the alphabet and religious teachings there. His grandmother waited for him outside the school, feeding the street dogs in the meantime. Their life in the village was simple, peaceful, and full of love. The bond between the author and his grandmother was strong and full of care.

(a) What made Einstein’s life in Munich miserable? What did he realize after six months? 6

Answer:  Einstein’s life in Munich became miserable because he did not like the school’s strict discipline. The teachers were rude and did not encourage free thinking. He was also lonely and had no real friends. He didn’t enjoy the way subjects were taught by memorizing without understanding.

After six months, Einstein realized that he could not learn anything meaningful in that school. He understood that staying there would not help him grow, so he decided to leave the school and go somewhere better to continue his education.

(b) Narrate the events leading to Ranga’s marriage. 6

Answer:  Ranga was a young man from the village of Hosahalli who went to Bangalore to study English. When he returned, people thought he might marry a modern girl or not marry at all. The narrator, who was an elderly man, wanted Ranga to marry a good village girl named Ratna.

The narrator planned a meeting between Ranga and Ratna. Ranga liked her but didn’t express it. The narrator then tricked Ranga by saying Ratna was already married, which made Ranga sad. Later, the narrator revealed the truth — Ratna was not married. Ranga felt happy and agreed to marry her. In this way, with the narrator’s smart planning, Ranga and Ratna got married.

(a) Why was Ranga’s homecoming a great event?

Answer: Ranga’s homecoming was a big event because he was the first person from the village of Hosahalli to go to Bangalore to study English. At that time, very few people in the village knew English. So, when Ranga returned, many villagers gathered at his house to see him, curious to know how he had changed after studying in the city.  

(b) Describe the quality of mangoes in Hosahalli.

Answer: The mangoes in Hosahalli are known for their unique sour taste. The narrator describes them as so sour that just one bite can make you feel the sourness reach the top of your head. These mangoes are famous in the village and are used to make chutney.  

(c) Why did Albert see no point in memorizing dates?

Answer: Albert Einstein believed that memorizing dates and facts was not useful because he could look them up in books whenever needed. He thought that understanding ideas and concepts was more important than just remembering facts without understanding.
