 A Roadside Stand

Robert Frost

Simple Meaning of the Text

The poet voices the cry of the rural folk, who are barely noticed by their more fortunate counterparts, living in the cities. An ordinary farmer builds a 'new' vegetable stand outside his 'old' house,at

the edge of the busy highway in the hope that passing cars would buy the produce.

Unfortunately, the 'polished traffic that sped across dia not notice the roadside stand that begged pathetically for financial assistance in order to sustain itself. Ironically, it is the produce from the rural areas that sustains the glamourous life of the urban rich. The only thought that crossed the mind of the urban elite when they saw the stand was that these people had marred the beauty of the landscape with the inelegant paint, and the directions signs that were twisted wrong.

The stand had nothing sophisticated to sell. It sold wild berries in wooden containers and some vegetables cultivated in the village. In addition they offered the pleasure of rest at a beautiful mountain landscape. The city dwellers had the money, but were selfish and did not want to part with it. On the other hand the roadside stand begged for some little sustenance that would merely improve their livelihood. It also wanted the help that had been promised to them by the political parties in their manifestoes.

Instead the rural poor were provided with a theatre and a store that would distract them from the issues that needed attention. The distractions were provided with the pretence to benefit them but in actuality they were diversions that would draw them away from the more serious concerns of life. The city dwellers greedy good-doers, beneficent beasts of prey squeezed benefits out of them. Like flies they swarmed over their lives and cheated them for selfish gains. They taught them how to sleep and lulled them into complacency and in the process robbed them of their peace of mind. The poet is upset looking at the miserable plight of the village people who hope with an almost childish belief, that one day at least someone of all the thousand selfish people who pass in the cars will hait even if it was only to inquire about the prices of farm products,The poet pleads the cause of these people. He feels no amount of material progress of the country can uplift the people till these masses live a sub-normal existence. He would be relieved if these people are pulled out of their misery. But in his saner moments he realizes that it is not a simple job. The poet wonders in the end if there could be someone who would provide relief and end the pain that he feels at the plight of these people.
