1. Read the following passage carefully:
People travelling long distances frequently have to decide whether they would prefer to go by land, sea or air. Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours Train compartments soon get cramped and stuffy) It is almost impossible to take your mind off the journey. Reading is only a partial solution, for the monotonous rhythm of the wheels clicking on the rails soon lulls you to sleep. During the day, sleep comes in snatches. At night when you really wish to go to sleep, you rarely manage to do so. If you are lucky enough to get a couchette, you spend half the night staring at the small blue light in the ceiling, or fumbling to find your passport when you cross a frontier. Inevitably you arrive at your destination almost exhausted.
Long car journeys are even less pleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motor-ways you can at least travel fairly safely at high speeds, but more often than not, the greater part of the journey is spent on narrow, bumpy roads which are crowded with traffic. By comparison, trips by sea offer a great variety of civilized comforts. You can stretch your legs on the spacious decks, play games, swim, meet interesting people and enjoy good food -always assuming, of course, that the sea is calm. If it is not, and you are likely to get sea-sick, no form of transport could be worse. Even if you travel in ideal weather, sea-journeys take a long time. Relatively few people are prepared to sacrifice up to a third of their holidays for the pleasure of travelling on a ship.
Aeroplanes have the reputation of being dangerous and even hardened travellers are intimidated by them. They also have the grave disadvantage of being the most expensive form of transport. But nothing can match them for speed and comfort. Travelling at a height of 30,000 feet, far above the clouds, and at over 500 miles an hour is an exhilarating experience. You do not have to devise ways of taking your mind off the journey, for an aeroplane gets you to your destination rapidly. For a few hours, you settle back in a deep armchair to enjoy the flight. The real escapist can watch a free film show and sip a hot or cold drink on some services. But even when such refreshments are not available, there is plenty to keep you occupied. An aeroplane offers you an unusual breathtaking view of the world. You soar effortlessly over high mountains and deep valleys. You really see the shape of the land. If the landscape is hidden from view, you can enjoy the extraordinary sight of unbroken clouds, plains that stretch out for miles before you, while the sun shines brilliantly in a clear sky. The journey is so smooth that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping. However you decide to spend your time, one thing is certain; you will arrive at your destination fresh and uncrumpled. You will not have to spend the next few days recovering from a long and arduous journey.
On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following questions:

Ans: On October 20th, our school organized a function to felicitate Lovlina Borgohain, the Olympic bronze medalist. The event was held in the school auditorium and was attended by students, teachers, and staff. The principal, Mr. John, welcomed Lovlina and congratulated her on her achievement. Lovlina shared her journey to the Olympics and the hard work and determination that it took to get there. She also shared some tips on how to pursue one's dreams and succeed. The students were inspired by Lovlina's words and gave her a standing ovation. Overall, it was a great opportunity for our school community to learn from and celebrate the success of a talented and accomplished athlete.

Your state government had banned the use of plastic bags. You are Ranjit/Ranjita, a reporter of the Assam Tribune. Write a report in 100-125 words on how the ban is being ignored and what damage the indiscriminate use of plastic bags is causing to the environment. 10
Ans: As a reporter for the Assam Tribune, it has come to my attention that the ban on plastic bags in our state is being widely ignored. Despite the ban being implemented over a year ago, plastic bags can still be found being used and distributed at various stores and markets.
The indiscriminate use of plastic bags is causing serious damage to the environment. These bags take hundreds of years to decompose and, in the meantime, contribute to pollution and the destruction of natural habitats. In addition, the production of plastic bags requires the use of non-renewable resources, such as oil, and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
It is crucial that the ban on plastic bags is strictly enforced in order to protect the environment and ensure the sustainable development of our state. The government must take strong action to enforce the ban and educate the public on the dangers of plastic bag use.
4. You are Navanil / Navanita. You have seen an advertisement in a newspaper for a post of a Computer Assistant in the local post-office. Write an application, along with your detailed resume, to the Post-Master in response to the advertisement applying for the post. 10

Ans: The ‘Last Lesson’ by Alphonse Daudet is mainly about the longing to learn the mother tongue and love for it. It has a sense of patriotism.

Ans: Geoff was as quiet boy and kept his views to himself. He spoke little and did not share his views with others. He was the first person with whom Sophie shared all her secrets. She was jealous of his silence and for her it seemed that when he was quiet he was in those places where she had never been.

(a) Describe the bangle makers of Firozabad How does the vicious circle of the Sahukars, the middlemen, never allow them to come out of their poverty ?
Ans: The bangle makers of Firozabad have spent generations working around furnaces. Every other family in Firozabad is engaged in making bangles. They sit around lamps welding glass, making bangles for all the women in the land.
These families are caught in the web of poverty. They are burdened by the stigma of caste. They believe that they are born to this caste and thus bangle making is a god given lineage, out of which they can never imagine a life. They cannot organise themselves into cooperatives for fear of the police. Individual bangle makers are always caught in the vicious circle of the middlemen and the sahukars. This vicious circle exploits them so much that they are left with so less money that they have only enough to engage in bangle making. They cannot afford to have two meals a day. Thus they live in abject poverty.

How differ on usual was the atmosphere at school on the day of the last lesson ?
Ans: The order from Berlin caused some changes in the school that day. The entire school seemed strange and solemn. The villagers were sitting on the back benches of the classroom quietly to thank M. Hamel for his forty years of faithful service and for showing their respect for the country. M Hamel also had put on his best dress on that day though it was not an inspection or prize day. The order from Berlin also brought a sense of repentance for those who in spite of having time didn't learn French properly.

(a) What are the similarities between the lives of Bama and ZitkalaSa though they belong to their respective situations ?
Ans: Both Bama and Zitkala belong to the marginalized communities. But the reader can very well note the despise, racial discrimination and unhealthy treatment towards humanity in general and women in particular. There are two episodes in which the first account relates to an American Indian woman who becomes the victim of racial discrimination. She is admitted to a school where native Indians do not get dignity. Accordingly she is forced by the whites to follow their traditions and traits. Simons, the girl, is dragged out to shingle out her long hair. She cries, struggles and resists but ultimately she feels like one of the marry animals driven by a herder.
In the same way, Bama, a Tamil Dalit girl, is very much upset to experience the curse of untouchability. The elders of her community have to bow before the upper caste. They have to work hard for them. They have no respect. Thus both the girls have two different cultures. They struggle hard and work against the exploitation, depression, untouchability and racial discrimination. In the end their utilised efforts bring good results and recognition their voice against social evil triumphs.

(b) Give an elaborate account of the celebration associated with Uruka, the important part of Magh Bihu.
Ans:The Uruka, or the Bihu eve, happens to be an important aspect of Magh Bihu. On this day the womenfolk get ready for the next day with chira, pitha, laru, curd etc. The Uruka is not a one-day affair, as fuel, fish and meat is to be collected. In tribal societies, women prepare rice beer, usually un-distilled, which takes four to five days to mature.
Another activity is building temple-like structures in fields. These are usually built by young boys. The structures are made with green bamboo, dried banana leaves and hay. Such a structure is called meji. The hut-like structures are called Bhelaghar. Sometimes, cowherds pass the night in a Bhelaghar, warming themselves by a fire. They also feast on the vegetables stolen from the villagers' gardens and the eatables given to them. Uruka feasting may be a family affair or communal.

Ans: The Astrologers had foretold that one day the Tiger King would actually have to die. “The child will grow up to become the warrior of warriors, hero of heroes, champion of champions.
(b) Who was Dr. Sadao ? Where was his house ?
Ans: Dr. Sadao was a Japanese Surgeon who studied medicine and surgery in America.
Dr. Sadao Hoki’s house was built on a spot of the Japanese Coast. The low, square stone house was set upon rocks well above a narrow beach which was outlined with bent pines.
(c) Who was Hana ? What did she notice coming out of the mist ?
Ans: Hana was the wife of Dr. Sadao who was a very caring, loving and sympathetic woman. Dr. Sadao met her at a party which was held for foreign students at an American professor’s house.
Hana and Sadao saw something black come out of the mists. It turned out to be a man, as if flung up out of the ocean, staggering a few steps, his body outlined against the mist and arms above his head. Hana and Dr. Sadao noticed something black come out of mist, which they later came to know was a man (the prisoner or the soldier).
(d) What is the significance of Bhelaghar ?
Ans: On the Uruka people made some hutlike structures called Bhelaghar. This has a great significance. People, particularly the cowherds, pass the night in a Bhelaghar warming themselves by the fire and making use of vegetables that they steal from other’s gardens. Next day this is set on fire and the elders offer prayings to ‘Agni’.
(e) How did Annan explain the elder man's action to Bama ?
Ans: Annan told Bama that the man was not being funny when he carried the package by the string for his landlord. The upper caste people believed that others must not touch them. If they did, they would be polluted. That was the reason why he (the elder man) had to carry the package by its string.
(f) Why and how did Derry enter Mr. Lamb's garden ?
Ans: Derry gets into his garden not to steal or pick up apples. He enters in it there because he likes the place and thinks it to be empty. He enters the garden by climbing over the garden wall though the gate is always open.
(g) Why did Derry go back to Mr. Lamb in the end?
Ans: Lamb had inspired Derry to overcome his disability by adopting an optimistic outlook on life. Mr. Lamb's teachings and advice impacted Derry to tread the path showed by him, and thus he returned to Mr. Lamb.
(h) Why was Zitkala-Sa terrified when Judewin told her that her hair would be cut short ?
Ans: Zitkala-Sa was terrified when Judwin told her that her hair would be cut short. Because, Zitkala-Sa’s mother had taught her that only unskilled warriors who were captured had their hair shingled by the enemy. Among their people, short hair was worn by mourners and shingled hair by cowards.
