1. Read the following passage carefully :


A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was a multifaceted personality, a statesman and visionary and above all a good human being. He was a brilliant scientist and modern thinker. When I joined him as Press Secretary after ten days of his becoming President, at his very first meeting he gave me his vision of a developed India. He spoke of how he wanted to make Rashtrapati Bhavan a people's place where voice of the millions of downtrodden people of India would be heard and action taken. Indeed during his time Rashtrapati Bhavan became a people's place and he became popular as People's President. He wanted that institution of the President to be totally identified by ordinary people.


President Kalam took his Presidency seriously from day one. He was as comfortable with constitutional and legal issues as he was with school children. He was committed to nation-building and created a vision document to make India a developed nation by 2020. He made a powerpoint presentation to senior ministers and bureaucrats on this.

He used to make powerpoint presentations at conferences and seminars both in India and abroad to discuss that vision. On these, he used to work himself and he was very particular about every word and sentence.

He did it during his visits abroad and while meeting dignitaries such as US President George Bush and Pakistan President Pervez Musharaf. When he presented his vision of India's nuclear energy requirements to Mr. Bush and his vision of a joint fight India and Pakistan could wage against poverty, the respective Presidents commented that they had to become scientists to understand the presentation. You can't think of any other President of a country. who would have done that. His vision for the nation was based on equality, the dignity of the individual and justice, social, economic and political, to every Indian. Only then can India succeed and everybody sing the song of India, he used to say. I met him last on July 22, five days before his demise. It was a one-on- one meeting that lasted a good 40 minutes. He was full of ideas as always, very active and discussed different subjects. He used to tell me, "Whatever you do, do differently. Wherever you work, leave a mark and be remembered." During his presidency he was always comfortable, except on two occasions, when his unease was visible. When he had to give his consent to the Office of Profit Bill, 2006 after it was sent for the second time by the Parliament, and when he had to approve the ordinance on Disqualification of Elected Representatives in 2004 as it was sent to him by the Cabinet for a second time.

He was an icon for the youth. He used to say, "Aiming small is a crime. Youth should have the courage to think differently and explore unexplored paths. Difficulties would come but don't be afraid of them-overcome them with your intellect and hard work.”

The man who pioneered India's missile programme was always proud of his work at the Indian Space Research Organisation and other scientific institutions. He used to believe that a scientific approach could find a solution to every problem.

He was an ardent secularist, and also a religious man. He believed that all religions are like beautiful islands; but there is no connectivity between them. We should strive to achieve this connectivity and transform religion into spirituality. For him religion and morality were the same.

A man of vision, he always worked in mission mode. He had a mission to meet 10 lakh students and interact with them. He completed this when he left Rashtrapati Bhavan. He continued with this till his last breath. His childlike simplicity was an instant hit.

He got the sobriquet of being the People's President because of his humility and accessibility. President Kalam always worked towards building consensus rather than ramming down decisions.

He came from a modest background, but educated himself and worked hard to rise to the top. He was simply the missile man whose books were prime-sellers, whose lectures were always housed full. He was adored by children as he would give them easy-to-digest messages.

ANSWER:  Sophie lives in a world of dreams and fantasy. She is an incurable escapist, unwilling to face reality. Her aspirations are big and beautiful, including opening a boutique like Mary Quant. Sophie entertains ideas of becoming an actress and then a fashion designer, without considering the practicalities. Despite her family's financial limitations, she clings to her extravagant dreams.


On the other hand,Jansie is grounded in reality. She is practical and sensible. Jansie knows that their lower-middle-class background limits their options. She reminds Sophie that they are both earmarked for the biscuit factory. Jansie advises Sophie to be practical and not indulge in expensive dreams. She understands the limitations imposed by their socio-economic status. While Sophie dreams big, Jansie emphasizes practicality and the need to face life's challenges head-on.


These contrasting attitudes make Sophie and Jansie distinct and memorable characters in the story. Their interactions highlight the clash between dreams and practicality, creating a thought-provoking narrative  .

(a) Write a character-sketch of either (i) Tiger King or (ii) Derry.

ANSWER:- (i) Tiger King :The maharaja of Pratibandapuram had many titles and sub names but he was popularly known as 'the tiger king he was called so because he was selfish enough to kill 99 tigers ruthlessly just for the sake of fulfilling the astrologer's prediction.

The king was fearless as he managed to kill 99 tigers wherein on the other hand he was foolish to believe in astrologers prediction. He wasn't a good ruler and was least bothered about the people living in his kingdom .He even asked the toy seller to gift the toy to his son The king was an intelligent and manipulative man as he bribed the British officer to save his kingdom. He was not at all a man of principles even his marriage was a deal for him, so that he could kill hundreds tigers he married a princess whose kingdom comprised of sizeable number of tigers and killed a few tigers whenever he went to meet his father in law.


(ii) Derry : Derry is a 14-year-old boy who suffers from a sense of inferiority complex. It was because he was physically disabled due to a terrible accident in his childhood. As a result, he has a scarred face and is blind in one eye. This makes him lonely and withdrawn. He avoids the company of others. He thinks that people get scared when they look at his horrible face. So he keeps himself away from others. But his meeting with Lamb brings a turning point in his life. It gives him confidence. He is able to develop a positive attitude towards life.

Overall, Derry is a thoughtful and kind person who is able to see the beauty in the world despite his difficult circumstances.

ANSWER: On the first day in the land of apples, Zitkala felt overwhelmed and trapped. She described the environment as filled with harsh noises and unfamiliar voices, which made her feel like she was in a bedlam. To escape the plight of having her long hair cut, she attempted to hide by crawling under a bed in a dimly lit room. Despite being discovered and dragged out, she resisted by kicking and scratching. However, she was eventually tied to a chair and had her hair cut against her will, which deeply saddened her.

(a) Define Domahi.

ANSWER:- The term “Domahi” signifies the junction of two months. During this festival, people engage in feasting, rituals, and cultural activities to honor the agricultural cycle and seasonal transitions.


(b) How do the Kacharis observe the ritual of Magh Bihu ?

ANSWER:- The Kacharis observe the ritual of Magh Bihu in a unique and vibrant manner. They tie strings around fruit-bearing trees, feed rice to birds, fish, pigs, and dogs, mark their grain store with water mixed with cow dung on the Domahi holiday, practice the tradition of magan or begging on the seventh day, clean dishes, sacrifice birds to Bathow, sing carols, construct and set fire to Bhelaghars while singing praises, and participate in various sporting events like wrestling, racing, buffalo fighting, egg fighting, etc.



(c) Why was there no curtain in Lamb's house?

ANSWER:- There aren't any curtains at the windows of Mr Lamb's house because he was not fond of curtains. He also felt that by putting curtains at the windows he would shut things out and shut things in, which he did not want. Moreover he liked the light and the darkness and could also hear the wind.


(d) Is the Tiger King a satire?

ANSWER:- Yes, "The Tiger King" can be interpreted as a satire. It satirizes themes such as authoritarianism, obsession with power and conquest, and the absurdity of superstitions and astrological beliefs. The Maharaja's relentless pursuit of killing tigers, driven by astrological predictions and the belief that it would ensure his safety, highlights the folly of placing blind faith in such superstitions. ANSWER: The Maharaja got a wooden but rough gift of a tiger from a shop which was made by an unskilled carpenter. It had small slivers of wood on its surface. While playing with his son with the tiger, a sliver got pricked in his right hand. He pulled it out but infection spread all over the arm. After the operation, the doctors said, “The operation is successful but the Maharaja is dead.” Thus, a small toy-tiger caused the death of the Tiger King and took its revenge upon the king.
