1. Read the following passage carefully:
Among all the planets of our solar system, the Earth is the only known planet which supports life. The environment of the Earth has made the existence, growth and development of all living beings possible.
The meaning of the word ‘environment’ is surroundings. We are surrounded by and interacting with various types of radiation, air, water, soil, rocks and minerals which are called abiotic factors of the environment. Similarly, we are also interacting with and are surrounded by our biotic environment consisting of living organisms which interact with each other and are inseparably bound up with their abiotic environment.
Environment affects the size, shape and colour of plants and animals and the ways in which they grow and live. The environment may even be responsible for the survival of a particular organism. We get our food, clothing, shelter and many other necessary things from the environment. The human environment has a cultural dimension as well. She lives surrounded by what she has made. Environmental Science attempts to understand the environment of our planet, and the impact of human life on our environment and vice versa. It is also a search for the solutions to the major environmental issues that confront us today.
Environmental degradation is perhaps the greatest threat to our survival on the Earth. Such degradation may be caused by nature. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods and droughts, lightning, hailstorms, cyclones etc. all can damage and cause hazards to all forms of life on the Earth. But man-made destruction is more dangerous for our environment, posing a serious threat to the future of mankind.
When environmental degradation is not very significant, nature can recover from the impact on its own. But during the last few decades, the world has been facing serious environmental problems due to an abnormal increase in population and an unplanned and unwise use of mega technology. All the three major components of our environment—air, water and land—are polluted now, creating serious health hazards.
The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in June 1972, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg (2002) are among the major UN-led initiatives to draw attention to the fast deteriorating condition of our environment.
On the basis of your understanding of the passage, answer the following questions:
(a) What has made life on the Earth possible? (1)
Answer: The environment of the Earth has made life possible on the Earth.
(b) What are the biotic factors of the environment? (2)
