One evening a blind ass lost his way in a thick wood. He did not know whether to go right or left. By good luck an owl was at hand and he offered to become the donkey's guide. The owl, who can see well at night, led the donkey safely back to the road. The donkey felt very grateful to the owl and thought highly of the owl's power to show him way. He begged the owl to stay with him and be his guide during the day. The owl agreed. As proud as a lord he sat on the donkey's back and the two friends started on their way. As the sun rose, the owl began to turn blind. But he was too proud to give up his new post. "Take care!" he cried, " if you go to the left you will fall into a pond." The donkey moved quickly to the right, fell over a cliff and was killed.

One day as Odysseus was wandering outside the camp. He met a stranger, a wise man who told him that there was an ancient prophecy concerning Troy, which said that the city would never be captured so long and the holy statue of Athene remained in her temple in the city. When evening came, Odysseus made up his mind to try to steal the statue, even though it was kept in the temple if the goddess in the very centre of Troy. He dressed as a beggar, hid a sharp sword under his rags and taking Diomedes with him he set off towards Troy.
